Don’t Book a North Shore Kauai Rental Until You Know These 5 Insider Tips

  • Posted on

We’ve learned a few things the hard way when booking our stay during several trips to Kaua‘i. Don’t get me wrong—Kaua‘i’s North Shore is one of the most incredible places you’ll ever visit, and the extra legwork is 100% worth it—but unlike other parts of Hawaii, you won’t find rows of big-name hotels waiting for your credit card swipe (that’s a good thing, BTW!).

What this does mean is that you’ll likely be doing a lot of research into privately-owned condos and homes. And as you may have already discovered, not all rentals are created equal...

If you’re planning your first trip (or even your second), here are five things we really wish someone had told us before we booked a vacation rental on Kaua‘i’s North Shore:

1. "Amenities" Can Mean a Lot of Things  Some properties offer fairly basic features, while others come with full-on resort perks—think pools, beach shuttles, tennis courts, or even a front desk to help when the electronic lock suddenly stops working (been there more than once). Both types of stays can be great, but know what kind of experience you want—and make sure the listing matches.

2. Air Conditioning Isn’t a Given This was a surprise the first time we visited: a lot of places rely on trade winds and fans instead of A/C.  That can be fine most days on the North Shore, but during the warmer months or for those who could do without the humidity, it’s worth checking the listing twice.  We now always confirm this directly with the host before booking.

3. All Ocean Views are Not Created Equal We’ve stayed in so-called “ocean view” units where you had to lean over the lanai and squint sideways to catch a glimpse of blue.  A true panoramic view of Hanalei Bay and the mountains is even more rare—and absolutely magical when you find it.  On a relate note, don’t assume beachfront access just because a property is along the coast.  Much of Princeville is up on a bluff, and many rentals don’t have an easy or direct way down to the sand.

4. Close Parking Isn’t Necessarily a Perk Nearby parking sounds convenient, right? But if your unit is right next to the parking lot, expect more foot traffic, car noise, and shining headlights during the early or late hours. For light sleepers or those who want to enjoy a peaceful morning cup of coffee or evening glass of wine on the lanai, that’s something to keep in mind.  A short walk from the lot (or ride on the golf cart shuttle if you're staying at Hanalei Bay Resort) might actually make for a more enjoyable stay.

5. Use the Big Platforms to Search—Then Book Smart Third party booking sites are great for discovering and comparing options, but their service fees can really add up.  Once you find a place you like, savvy searchers then do a quick Google search to look for the property manager's or host's direct booking site.  Many places (including ours at Hale i Lani) offer the same stay at lower rates when you book direct.

Kauai is one of our favorite places on the planet and a vacation here can be an unforgettable experience, but getting the rental right makes a huge difference, particularly if you're traveling with family or a group.  A little research and legwork upfront can go a long way in making your trip smoother, more relaxing, and might even free up some budget to upgrade that unforgettable Kaua'i excursion that your group will still be talking about years from now...
